10 Quotes about Character

I found these quotes while trying to find out who Duane Alan Hahn is (a different post, maybe later this week).

1. Character is much easier kept than recovered. Thomas Paine

2. The time is always right to do what is right. Martin Luther King Jr.

3. Men of genius are admired, men of wealth are envied, men of power are feared but only men of character are trusted. Unknown

4. The rotten apple spoils his companion. Benjamin Franklin

5. Right is right, even if everyone is against it and wrong is wrong, even if everyone is for it. William Penn

6. We are far more liable to catch the vices than the virtues of our associates. Diderot

7. It's not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are. Roy Disney

8. Aim above morality. Be not simply good, be good for something. Henry David Thoreau

9. You are only what you are when no one is looking. Robert C. Edwards

10. The measure of a man's real character is what he would do if he knew he never would be found out. Thomas B. Macaulay

It was labeled "Standards/Convictions/Morals" but really, I think a better word to summarize them is "character." However, the word standard reminded me of a sermon Pastor Kenneth Sullivan preached about a month ago regarding the Bible verse "So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him." Isaiah 59:19.
Numbers 2:2 in the New International Version of the Bible says "The Israelites are to camp around the Tent of Meeting some distance from it, each man under his standard with the banners of his family." I've always known/heard the preaching that the standard is a flag; however, it wasn't until this sermon preached by Pastor Sullivan that I learned the symbol on the flag denoted what the family's standards or values were. It was a very interesting message, and I wish the church had recorded it, but our recording system is down until the church is fully remodeled. Please pray that the City of Citrus Heights will approve our plans so we can continue with the work!
